Our strange world of words

What can be found there (poem) October 19, 2009

What can be found there

By Sue Paylor

In the wardrobe of my soul

Drapes a memory

Tattered silken blue

Broken Cuban heel

Pink moulting feather boa

Grease stained fedora.

In the wardrobe of my soul

Sabrani cigarette

Silver threepenny bit

Soldier’s epaulette

Cardboard crucifix

Lost green marble.

In the wardrobe of my soul

Children’s milk teeth

Curl of bright red hair

Crisp white handkerchief

Lone red sock

A Christmas cracker.

In the wardrobe of my soul

Dirty finger nail

Unwashed boiler suit

Paint splattered pinafore

Blood stained old schooltie,

Nun’s wimple.

In the wardrobe of my soul

Unworn wedding dress

Crumpled green top hat

Forgotten best man’s speech

Empty champagne glass

Punctured pipe dream.
